Success Stories
Crystal
Crystal entered the Take Stock In Children program as a seventh grader. She was working full time, maintaining a good grade point average, but losing her motivation. “I thought Bonnie and Jack [her mentors] would just go away – but they kept coming back every week, encouraging me, helping me see the future I couldn’t even see clearly. They really got me motivated again. They are like a second set of parents to me and I still talk with them every week."
We are very proud to say that Crystal graduated from Sarasota High School in 2002 with a 3.2 grade point average. She graduated from the University of South Florida, with a Bachelor's in Nursing, received a Master's degree in Nursing from the University of Central Florida and is beginning a doctoral nursing program August 2008 at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
“Take Stock gave me something to work for – a clear view of where I was going. When I needed an attitude adjustment – my mentors were always there. That is the best part of the program – the unconditional love, encouragement and guidance!”
India
India was enrolled in Take Stock in Children in middle school. She was an exemplary student throughout middle and high school. India’s grade point average was always well above a 3.5, she played saxophone in the Sarasota High School Marching Band, and she held a part-time job at Publix. She had a fantastic mentor and student advocate through our program and always had the drive and motivation to be the best she could be. Judging by her constant smile and upbeat attitude, you would never know that India’s home was the YMCA Homeless Shelter. Even though the odds were stacked against her, India knew that if she could achieve high school graduation, a full-tuition college scholarship was waiting to help change her life for the better.
In spite of the odds against her, India did graduate with honors and a graduate of the University of Florida.
