Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County, Inc.
Scholarships, Mentors and Hope for Children in Sarasota County
Our History: In 1995, Don Pemberton, a school guidance counselor and Director of the Pinellas County Education Foundation, had a visionto educate Florida’s at-risk youth.
Our Present: Today, Take Stock in Children is in all 67 counties in Florida. Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County, Inc. began in 1996 under the wing of a local non-profit and on July 1, 2002, became an independent non-profit when we obtained our own 501(c)(3). The program currently serves over 220 middle and high school students in 19 schools in Sarasota County and 125 local youth have graduated high school and attended post-secondary education.
Our Students: Students are selected in middle school through an application and interview process. The student’s family must meet financial guidelines (see current application) in order to be accepted into the program. All students sign a contract pledging to remain drug and crime free, maintain good grades and behavior and meet with a mentor.
Our Mentors: We believe that mentors are the key to the success of our students. Mentors provide a sympathetic ear, a word of encouragement, sound advice from personal experience and more. By meeting with students each week at his/her school during the year, our volunteers help guide our students toward a successful future.
Our Scholarships: Upon high school graduation, each Take Stock in Children student earns a full tuition scholarship for two years at a community college and two years at a state university via the Florida Prepaid College Foundation's Project STARS.
Our Future: Ninety-seven percent (97%) of Take Stock in Children scholarship recipients graduate from high school and attend post-secondary education. Our future and the future of thousands of local children are dependent upon the hearts and minds in our community. The need for mentors and financial support is unlimited, as is the potential of our youth.
